8Build Trials Liftroller E Mover for Waterloo Refurbishment

8Build ran the Liftroller E Mover through a working trial on a refurbishment job at Waterloo in central London. The point was to find out whether a compact electric mover could shift fit out materials around a tight inner city site faster than crews carrying them, and whether it fitted the way the trades already worked. It ran alongside live works rather than in a yard, so it had to earn its keep on a real programme.

The site

Waterloo is about as constrained as inner London gets. Refurbishment there means shared or timed loading zones, deliveries that cannot sit on the footpath, lifts shared with other trades and sometimes with the building users, and corridors that were never sized for pallets. There is nowhere to stockpile, so materials come in small drops, get broken down at the door and have to reach the workface the same day.

That is the kind of site that punishes manual handling. Every carton of board, every box of fittings and every length of framing gets picked up and put down more times than anyone counts, and each of those lifts is a chance for a back injury or a damaged finish. The programme makes it worse, because the quickest option in the moment is usually the one that carries the most risk. The rules and the practical fixes are set out in our note on manual handling on construction sites.

What they used

The trial centred on the Liftroller E Mover, a compact electric material mover with adjustable height. It was picked because it goes where a forklift or a standard pallet truck will not: through a doorway, along a finished corridor, into a room that is already part built. The height adjustment matters on a fit out, because the load has to meet the bench, the trolley or the stack it is going onto rather than being lifted across to it.

Where loads are heavier or the runs are longer, that work usually goes to the electric E Wagon, rated to 1,200 kg and driven on a remote so the operator walks clear of the load. For pallets that need raising rather than just moving, the powered stacker does the lift. And when material has to come in through the facade instead of up a shared lift, that is a job for the Liftroller Wall loading platform, which locks into an existing window opening and takes up to 1,200 kg.

How it worked on site

Materials landed at the delivery point, went onto the mover and travelled to the workface under power instead of on shoulders. The trial looked at four things: how the machine performed in a dense city environment, how it coped with the mix of materials a refurbishment throws up, whether it slotted into the crew's existing sequence without extra supervision, and whether the case stacked up for future jobs.

The answer on integration was the important one. Kit that needs its own crew, its own storage and its own set of rules tends to end up parked in a corner. The E Mover was used by the same people who were already moving the material, which is why it stayed in use instead of being trialled and shelved.

What it changed

8Build reported better material flow, less physical strain on the crews and time saved on the handling side of the programme. On the strength of that they carried Liftroller kit into their standard planning for similar urban refurbishment work rather than treating it as a one off.

Sydney has plenty of jobs with the same shape: an occupied building, one shared lift and nowhere to lay down. If that is yours, talk to our Sydney team about a free on site trial.
